Ink changes and alterations to documents, which are invisible to the naked eye, can be identified through the use of dedicated infra red and ultra violet examination equipment. This technology is often used in cases of suspected cheque conversions.

Using specialist equipment, "invisible" evidence can be recovered from documents. For example, the author of an anonymous letter can be identified through the use of Electro Static Detection Analysis (ESDA), which will detect handwriting impressions that would otherwise go undetected.

Example

A client received an anonymous threatening letter. To protect his identity, the author had cut words from a newspaper and stuck them onto a blank sheet of paper. However an ESDA test of the blank sheet, revealed impressions of a previous letter that had been written above the blank sheet. Follow up enquiries based on that information, led to the identification and subsequent arrest of the "anonymous" author.
